First Green Flag of 2008
As everyone knows, I’m an avid race fan (notice I said RACE and not NASCAR). The green flag is only 10 minutes from flying for the what I considering the first race of the season, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. I know most people aren’t that into racing and a lot of people just think it’s boring and people just drive around and it takes no athletic ability. Granted tackling a 200 lb running back or hitting a ball out of the part seems much more athletic but professional race car driver isn’t actually an easy task. I’ll let you all know in July for sure when I get to put my 8 laps in at Kansas speedway but I can just imagine what it’s like. Since most people think Nascar is the only racing there is…let me explain what makes the 24 Hours of Daytona so interesting. Teams or 3 or 4 drivers must drive one car for 24 hours straight. This is the American Lemans Series and the field is packed with two different car classes. The GT class is the sports cars you might actually see on the road, like Porsches, Corvettes and Mustangs. The DP class (Daytona Prototype) is a much more powerful and quicker car. A 3.56 mile road course with cars going at different paces makes overtaking something that requires tactical driving. 2500+ miles and 500+ gallons of fuel spread across day racing, evening racing, night racing and morning racing and if it rains you just change your slicks to treaded tires and keep going. It’s called an endurance race and draws drivers from all the major racing series to join and form teams to make it through this unique race. I know this won’t spark the interest of most people but I considering this one of the most exciting races of the year. Some year I hope to enjoy it form the infield of Daytona camping over night with cars racing around me for 24 hours straight. For those interested in live scoring and images during can visit the website dedicated to just this race (no one can say the night photos are not cool!). 24 Hours of Daytona
