Odd Man Out

I learned something very intersting this weekend. It has been 2 months since I packed my boxes up with the watchful eye of a supervisor on me. I realized that I don’t really fit in with that group anymore. Apparently some people think there is some new secret “club” but really the people I hang out with do not talk about work more than 5% of the time as apposed to probably 85% of the time. Going out on a Friday to sit and listen to a group of people talk about work, not really very exciting I’m learning… especially because it is not talking. It isn’t so bad when you change the subject, but you can’t even have a normal conversation for more than about 5 minutes before someone decides to turn it back around to being work related. And it is not like there is a bridge to make it work related, it is just randomly bringing something up about work that some how is supposed to relate to what the topic. Maybe before I didn’t mind cause I could put in my two cents. I still can put in my two cents, but really my two cents can be summed up quickly and easily. Technical Support supervisors/managers have little technical skills, quality assurance managers have little testing skills, documentation manager has little writing skills, programming manager has zero social skills, and the company as a whole fears change and input from anyone without manager attached to their name. That is unfortunate because at a company that bases a persons value on how long they’ve been there, not how much knowledge they possess, the company will always suffer from the same problem… lack of change to better the company and its employees. STI was a job, not a career and if you expect anything more then I’d spend your time finding a new job instead of talking about how bad it is there. I mean come on, they had the option to have an IT staff that could prevent people from doing things they didn’t want and instead they feel it right to invade your privacy while you are out to lunch… but no one knows more about technology than the guys that think the distance between the ide connectors on a ribbon cable can cause data corruption so why have IT staff.

Rob will be very glad to hear that I went out for a 15 mile ride yesterday. I kind of thought getting back on a bike would kill me at this point, but honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. I’m actually not even sore today from the workout. The problem is finding some sort of routine that I can keep up with. I’m pretty sure I don’t want to have to go out and ride every day as my workout and I’m pretty sure I’m the kind of person that needs to do something every day or I’ll just do nothing for a week and then not want to get back in to it. For the record, I still have no chance of keeping up with you Rob!

Last Saturday we headed out to see the World of Outlaws at Eagle. For all you that think racing is boring or dumb or not a sport or whatever… stop reading. I think bouncing a ball off the floor is boring and I keep my mouth shut so I don’t really need to hear your uneducated opinion until you want to give it a try. I have to say, watching those 950 HP sprint cars go around a 1/2 mile of dirt is pretty impressive. For some reason local dirt track racing is always fun even if you don’t know the drivers. Granted, I wouldn’t want to shell out $35 an evening to go out there, but World of Outlaws is a little different than a normal Saturday night of racing. Once you put drivers on the track that are known nation wide for racing in the highest level of sprint car racing, it is even more impressive. So that is World of Outlaws last weekend, IRL race in Iowa next weekend, and driving at Kansas Speedway two weekends after that. That’s a lot of racing in a month!

It’s not about distance or speed it is all about getting out on the bike and enjoying the day no matter how far or fast that maybe. A bad day on the bike is better then a good day off of it.
