How Many Is Too Many?

Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter… How may social networks does one need to belong to? I think it is hard enough to keep up with one, and I have my website to work on too. The interesting thing, each serves its own little purpose I suppose. MySpace was the first one I really used, and although the visual customization is appealing to me, the average person’s profile usually hurts my eyes. MySpace has definitely become my “music” social network. The majority of my friends now are bands and really I only log in every few days to get updates on what those artists are doing. LinkedIn I really haven’t done much with and probably should. The only of the social networks that seems to keep a professional atmosphere since it is career based. Twitter I am not sold on yet but it seems like a good concept actually if people would make good use of it, but they won’t. This one I signed up for and people some how found me so I suppose I should start learning how it works. I have to say that Facebook is by far the best in terms of keeping in touch with people. I wish they would do something about the boring layout though. Just adding a few color profile options, like Twitter and MySpace’s home page, would be nice. Bright white hurts the eyes at 4:00 AM.

The most annoying thing to plague MySpace and Facebook… the addon apps. The addon apps can be really annoying in Facebook now with the new home page layout. Seriously, Facebook users, you don’t need to publish everything you do in your games to your wall. If you are really that hard up for activity to show up on your Facebook account, you should probably get out and meet some people instead of sitting on Facebook all night. I couldn’t careless about what you have accomplished in mob wars and who you super poked today for the fourth time! I also haven’t figured out why the lovely people at Facebook didn’t start to weed out the apps. How many war games do we need, which includes mob, viking, vampire, mafia and all other counter parts that are the exact same thing. I have had to stop accepting drinks because I have three different apps installed already. If you didn’t send me a drink with one of those apps then it is just going to sit on the virtual bar and get warm, or cold, depending what kind of drink you passed. Gift giving is fun, but again… can’t we combine all the gifts in to one super app and stop making me install different gift apps just to see what I received and what I can send back.

The interesting thing, I have two completely different personalities between MySpace and Facebook. MySpace is the darker, creepier side of me and Facebook is the more normal, realistic side of me (admit it, we all have darker sides). Sometimes I wonder if I am bi-polar. I find it really annoying when people use self-pity in their posts to get attention. Sure, some seem to think I am cryptic and weird. My MySpace quote is “All Hope is Gone”. Let me decrypt that for you. Status posts that proclaim the reason your world is ending is just kind of sad and really I have better things to read about. Maybe contacting someone that can actually help you will be a lot more useful than seeing if your online friends will post something to make you feel better, or worse, which ever you are going for. I suppose I should thank Facebook for the hide feature (people and apps).
